The inside surface of the glass tube should be insulated by installing a layer of glass wool, fiberglass, or other insulating material between the glass tube and the metal of the collector tube. The collector tube is typically constructed of steel. Copper collectors were commonly used in the early 1970s. Today, copper is rarely used due to increased costs, environmental concerns, and high rates of corrosion. While glass collectors can be used, most glass collectors used today have a silver or silver alloy coating on their inside surface, to make them compatible with the silver-alloy coated collector tube. A glass-lined solar water heater is less likely to develop leaks, and the leak will be less likely to be visible than a tubular solar water heater since the leak will not be inside the collector tube. A glass-lined solar water heater does not require the use of asbestos. Since the thermal insulating properties of the glass lining are good, a glass-lined solar water heater requires fewer components to operate, so it requires less maintenance and is easier to maintain. Since the collector tube is located inside the glass lining, a glass-lined solar water heater is simpler to repair than a tubular solar water heater. Since the collector tube is usually made of copper, copper-based alloys, or silver-alloy coated copper, which is compatible with the silver-alloy coated collector tube, there is less risk that the glass lining will be damaged during repairs. Since the collector tube is installed inside the glass lining, the collector tube will not become detached during shipping. A glass-lined solar water heater does not require a chimney. The insulating properties of the glass lining are so good that it does not require a chimney, and the chimney is not needed to reduce the chance of corrosion at the point of connection between the collector tube and the solar water heating system. A glass-lined solar water heater does not require an expansion tank. The ability of a glass-lined solar water heater to withstand corrosion and impact means that the system does not require an expansion tank.
